Why I Started Woodland Studios
Woodland Studios has been a part of my life since I was born. No, I didn’t come into this world as a full-time businesswoman; Woodland Studios was the woodworking company my dad and uncle owned (you can learn more about it by visiting my ‘Why Woodland’ webpage). I saw the name everywhere and was always proud to tell my friends that my family owned its own business. I loved spending time with my dad in the shop, and occasionally, I even got to travel with him to shows where he sold products. These experiences created some truly sweet childhood memories. The business was dissolved when I was in middle school, but the entrepreneurial impact it left on my life has always stayed with me.
Family businesses have surrounded my life. Along with Woodland Studios, my other aunt and uncle own a landscaping company, Abma’s Landscaping, and my sister and brother-in-law own a photography company, Apollo Fields. I have seen my family put in the hard work required to run a business, from sleep deprivation and stressful days to endless paperwork. I have also witnessed the joys these businesses bring—seeing my family pursue their passions, being more present with their loved ones, and earning a living from what they love.
That being said, I never thought I would own my own business. I have had jobs where I was genuinely happy, and for those, I am grateful. I have also had jobs where going to work every day was a struggle, and I now view those as valuable learning opportunities. But through all of these, I have found great joy when I can work in digital media.
My favorite part of all my previous jobs is delivering a product that not only meets but exceeds expectations. When I can truly capture the 'why' behind a product, event, or program, and bring it to life in an exciting way, it brings me great satisfaction.
So, why start my own business? I want to continue doing what I love, but on my own terms—capturing memories, telling stories, and meeting genuine people.
Remember those fond childhood memories of me sitting in the wood shop with my dad? I want that for my child one day. My husband and I are in the adoption process, and we hope to be parents soon. We honestly do not know when that will be, and we are okay with that, but I want my child to see the joy and passion behind my work. I want to be able to take them to the doctor without having to clear it with a supervisor and worry about how many hours I have left in my leave bank. I want to be a role model, showing them that joy through their chosen path.
So, after much prayer and consultation with professionals, family, and friends, I am excited to take this next step in my life. Thank you all for coming along for the ride!
